Dr. Flake joined the University of Virginia this past fall as the inaugural Richard Lyman Bushman Chair of Mormon Studies in the Department of Religious Studies. Dr. Flake received her M.A. in Religious Studies from the Catholic University of America in 1995, and her PhD from the University of Chicago in 2000. She published a seminal work in 2004, The Politics of Religious Identity: the Seating of Senator Reed Smoot, Mormon Apostle.
