In Fall 2017, my life was forever changed when I interviewed to join the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society. Intellectual and quirky, our Society makes Fridays my favorite day of the week. One minute, we’re discussing the Kavanaugh hearings; the next, we’re lambasting bad poetry. There’s never a dull moment in the Hall, and you’re certain to find something that piques your interest.
During my time in our Society, I’ve served on the Pen and Ink Committee, as Secretary, and as President. We have a plethora of opportunities for our members to engage with Society functions. Event-planning, flag football, humorous debates — there’s a place for undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines.
Jeff Soc is the oldest organization on Grounds, and our hallowed traditions endear us to many. However, we must change with the times and act conscientiously in light of both our and this University’s history.
Whether you’re a WGS major, art activist, or any UVA student reading this who has a passion, we want to hear your opinions at interview week. Stop by in September to have a discussion with us and to see what we have to offer. We look forward to meeting you.
